It's What's Inside That Counts

Pro-Tec skate helmets come in a few different versions. The first, is certified to the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) based on safety regulations impact standards for bike helmets & the second is intended for skate use only. The outer shells, however, are the same between the Pro-Tec helmets. It's what's in the inside that counts.

Within those standards are two very simple differences. Soft foam, or skate helmets have a cushy inside liner and are intended to protect against multiple, low force impacts. Soft foam, Pro-Tec helmets may not be certified. Hard foam, or bike (& some skate) helmets have an EPS foam liner. They are intended to protect against one major impact, because the hard foam condenses to absorb the force of impact and does not regain its original shape. All hard foam helmets with an EPS liner are CPSC certified for bike use. They can also be used while doing other activities, like skating.

What's In A Pro-Tec Liner?

EPS or Expanded Polystyrene foam liners are intended for bike and skate helmets and have a hard styrofoam liner inside that meets the CPSC Safety Standard for bicycle helmets. The one and done helmet, as I call it. The Pro-Tec helmets that have this liner are:The Pro-Tec X Spitfire, The Classic, B2, Bucky Lasek Classic, Classic Full Cut, X Odyssey, Cyphon, Shovelhead 2 and Auger.

Multi-Impact SXP Certified Liners are ideal for aggressive riding styles. These SXP liners have built0in rebound control, which means once the liners have been compressed, the SXP memory kicks in and the liner rebounds, maintaining its impact-absorbing qualities. The Multi-Impact SXP Pro-Tec helmets are the only lightweight multi-impact helmets to be CE/CPSC certified. The Pro-Tec helmets that have this liner are: The Pro-Tec Ace and B2 Bike helmets.

2 Stage Liners are in all Pro-Tec Skate helmets. The softer liner is generally more comfortable, as it conforms to your head. However, these Skate helmets are Not certified to CPSC bike helmet safety standards. You will still get the comfy feeling this material provides after a hit. The Pro-Tec helmets with 2 stage liners are: The Pro-Tec Classic Skate, Ace Skate and B2 Skate helmets.
